In a world of screens and digital noise, there's something quietly powerful about a child sitting with a beautifully made wooden board, turning gears, sliding beads, and exploring textures with their fingertips. That's exactly what Kiani set out to create — and they've done it beautifully.
Handcrafted in Cape Town, South Africa, Kiani designs educational toys and activity products for babies and toddlers that encourage screen-free play, sensory exploration, fine motor development, and meaningful moments of discovery. Each piece is as lovely to look at as it is to play with.
The Story Behind Kiani
Kiani began the way the best things often do — with love, creativity, and a belief that play should mean something.
The brand was originally started by Kiara's parents in George, where the first activity boards were crafted by hand with care and a deep appreciation for hands-on learning. The name "Kiani" is especially meaningful: it was inspired by a combination of Kiara's name and her sister's name, Nika — a family brand in the truest sense.
In 2025, Kiara took over the business from her parents and relocated Kiani from George to Cape Town, where the brand has continued to grow into a thoughtfully curated collection of educational toys, sensory products, and custom projects for babies, toddlers, families, and child-friendly spaces.
Every product is created with a focus on quality, functionality, and developmental value — while maintaining the soft, modern aesthetic that fits beautifully into homes, nurseries, classrooms, and play spaces.
Why Activity Boards?
Kiani's activity boards are Montessori-inspired, which means they're designed around how children naturally learn — through touch, movement, repetition, and self-directed exploration. Rather than telling a child what to do, these boards invite them to discover.
Each board features a variety of interactive elements — spinning gears, sliding beads, touchable textures, and simple manipulatives — all securely attached for safe play. The result is a toy that grows with your child, offering new challenges and discoveries as their skills develop.
Key developmental benefits include:
- Fine motor skill development through hands-on manipulation
- Hand-eye coordination and focus
- Sensory exploration through varied textures and movements
- Problem-solving and cognitive development
- Independent, screen-free play
Meet the Characters
Each Kiani activity board is shaped around a loveable animal character, making them as charming as they are functional. The range currently includes three characters, each available in two sizes.
Ellie the Elephant
A firm favourite, Ellie the Elephant is available as both a large wall-mountable board and a small portable version. The large Ellie (600 x 450 x 50mm) is perfect for a nursery or playroom wall, turning any corner into an interactive learning station. The small Ellie (450 x 300 x 50mm) is lightweight and portable — ideal for tabletop, lap, or floor play, and easy to move between rooms or take along on visits.
Wally the Whale
Wally the Whale brings a touch of the ocean to playtime. Like Ellie, Wally comes in a large wall-mountable format (600 x 450 x 50mm) and a smaller portable size (450 x 300 x 50mm). Both versions feature the same rich mix of interactive elements designed to keep little hands busy and little minds engaged.
Shelly the Sheep
Soft in name and spirit, Shelly the Sheep is a wonderful addition to the Kiani family. Available in both large (600 x 450 x 50mm) and small (450 x 300 x 50mm) formats, Shelly is a beautiful choice for nurseries and play spaces with a nature-inspired or farmyard theme.
Hugo the Hippo
The newest member of the Kiani crew, Hugo the Hippo is currently available in the small portable size (450 x 300 x 50mm) — making him a great option for families who want a compact, go-anywhere activity board with plenty of personality.
Large vs Small: Which Size Is Right?
Choosing between the large and small boards comes down to how and where you plan to use them.
The large boards (600 x 450mm) are wall-mountable and designed to become a permanent feature of a nursery, playroom, or classroom. They're a statement piece as much as a toy — beautiful enough to display, engaging enough to return to again and again.
The small boards (450 x 300mm) are lightweight and portable, designed for flexible play wherever your child happens to be. They work equally well on a tabletop, on the floor, or propped on a lap — and they're easy to pack for visits to grandparents, holidays, or childcare.
Handcrafted in South Africa
Every Kiani activity board is handcrafted in Cape Town using durable, high-quality materials. This isn't mass-produced plastic — it's a considered, locally made product built to last through years of enthusiastic play. Buying Kiani means supporting a small South African business with a genuine story, genuine craft, and a genuine commitment to the children who use their products.
