It's September. The festive season feels far away — until it doesn't. If you've ever found yourself ordering gifts in a panic in the second week of December, only to discover that the thing you really wanted to give is either out of stock or can't be delivered in time, you already know the argument for ordering early.
Here's the practical reality for Made by Artisans: most of our suppliers are small South African artisan producers. Many of them manufacture to order. And virtually all of them begin winding down operations in the last week of November — which means that by the time December arrives, your options narrow significantly. The products that are made by hand, in small batches, by people who take proper time off over the holidays, need more lead time than something pulled off a warehouse shelf.
Order in September or October and you'll have exactly what you want, when you want it. Order in December and you'll be working with what's available.
With that said — here's what we'd recommend giving this festive season.
For the Person Who Has Everything
KARU Sheepskin Slippers
The gift that nobody buys for themselves but everyone loves receiving. KARU has been making sheepskin slippers in Cape Town since 1968 — by hand, in small batches, in a range of styles from the classic Cosy Sheepskin Slipper to the ankle-high Oskie Slipper Boot for serious winter warmth. The Cosy Sheepskin is consistently our bestselling product — Sand, Caramel Brown, and Choc Brown lead the way, followed closely by Charcoal and Grey.
Available in Wool and Sheepskin lining versions across most adult and kids' sizes. Popular sizes sell out. Order early.
KARU Shloffy Travel Slippers
For the person who travels constantly and needs a slipper that travels with them. Soft-sole, packable, and genuinely useful — in Choc Brown, Sand, Charcoal, and Caramel Brown. The gift that will go on every trip they take next year.
For the Home
Cape Lasercut Coaster Sets
Our second-biggest gift category by revenue, and for good reason. Cape Lasercut's Africa Map Coaster Sets, Big-5 Shweshwe Coaster Set, and Protea Coaster Sets are the kind of South African gift that works for absolutely anyone — beautifully made, unmistakably local, and useful in every home. Laser-cut in Cape Town with precision and care. A perennial festive favourite for good reason.
Wick & Stone Candles
Hand-poured soy wax candles in custom concrete vessels, made on the slopes of Durbanville Hills. The 170g single-wick is an ideal stocking filler or add-on gift. The 1kg five-wick is the statement piece for someone whose home deserves it. Reusable concrete holders mean the vessel lives on long after the wax is gone.
Jacqui K Fragranced Wax Tablets
Nine essential oil-infused soy wax tablets, hand-poured in Cape Town. Tuck one into a gift box, a linen cupboard, or a wardrobe and the recipient gets weeks of subtle fragrance. Beautifully packaged and genuinely useful — the kind of small luxury that makes any gift feel more considered. Pick two or three scents and give them as a set.
For the Cook or the Host
PdJ Cotton Canvas & Leather Aprons
Handcrafted in South Africa, these are aprons for people who take their cooking (or their braai) seriously. Consistent top sellers and a gift that gets used every time someone ties it on. The kind of thing you get from a store like this, not from a supermarket shelf.
For the Traveller
sak.sak Bags
The full sak.sak range is available for gifting — from the compact 'kant.sak' crossbody to the 'vlieg.sak' travel bag, the 'skoon.sak' toiletry bag, and the new 'kar.sak' roadside safety bag. Machine washable, made in South Africa, and available with personalised embroidery on selected styles — which makes them an exceptionally thoughtful gift. Order personalised items early; embroidery adds to the lead time.
Rigsby Weekend Bag
For the person who travels properly. Beeswax-treated cotton canvas, veg-tanned leather trimmings, 30L capacity that meets airline carry-on standards, and a padded laptop sleeve. Handcrafted in Hillcrest, KZN. Available in Olive, Camel, and Charcoal. The bag that will still be in use in ten years.
For the Kids
Kiani
Kiani makes beautifully crafted wooden activity boards and sensory toys designed to grow with children. The Large Elephant Activity Board is one of our best-selling products store-wide — a testament to how much parents and gift-givers value toys that are well-made, open-ended, and built to last well beyond the festive season. Handcrafted in South Africa, and the kind of gift that gets played with daily rather than discarded in January.
Envirokid
South African-made children's gifts that are built to last and designed to delight. Browse the range for age-appropriate options that won't end up in a landfill by February.
KARU Baby & Kids Sheepskin Slippers
The smallest KARU slippers in the range — and possibly the most gifted. Baby sizes sell out fast. Order early.
The Most Important Thing: Order Before the End of November
A number of products across our range are made to order — KARU slippers in specific sizes and colours, PdJ aprons, Rigsby bags, and items with personalisation like the sak.sak range. These products are made by hand, by small South African artisan producers who close for the holidays like everyone else.
Our strong advice:
- Order made-to-order items by end of October to be safe
- Order in-stock items by end of November for guaranteed pre-Christmas delivery within South Africa
- International orders via TUNL typically take 5–10 business days — factor this in for gifts going abroad
The earlier you order, the more options you have. That's always been true. It's especially true when the gifts are made by hand.
